Eleven tropical volcanic eruptions which occurred between 1868 and 1980 have been analyzed for subsequent warm sea surface temperature anomalies in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, in an attempt to determine whether the 1982/1983 El Nino event and the eruption of El Chichon in April, 1982 are related. The composite result obtained through superposed epoch analysis indicates a significant warming of sea surface temperatures in the 0-10 deg S, 90-180 deg W region. It is also noted that the composite behavior of 20 eruptions at extratropical latitudes yield the opposite result, with a significant cooling of the sea surface temperature in this region. The association is significant at the 95 percent level.
