Convection in the vicinity of the first Lagrangian point of a contact binary system is analyzed using an approximate expression for the gravitational acceleration in the region considered and a steady-state polytropic model of a bridge between stars of equal mass. It is found that the criterion for convective instability in the bridge, which is located in a gravitational field that changes direction, is the same as under normal conditions. However, analysis of the trajectories of convective elements during the nonlinear development of perturbations in the bridge shows that convective energy flux between the components of the system is impossible. It is therefore proven that a bridge between the stars at their contact point cannot provide for the convective energy exchange that could explain the observed deviation of W UMa-type stars from the standard mass-luminosity relation.
