The solar eclipse which traversed the North American continent on February 26, 1979, was studied in connection with an extensive rocket and ground-based measurements program. Unfortunately, the plans for the investigation had to be modified because of the simultaneous occurrence of an energetic electron precipitation event which overwhelmed the quiet ionization rates for the lower ionosphere. The program was, therefore, relegated to a study of a disturbed lower ionosphere which additionally was perturbed by a solar eclipse. The present investigation is concerned with the results, uncertainties, and some of the implications of measurements conducted with rocket-borne quadrupole mass spectrometers. Attention is given to problems associated with conical sampling, positive ion composition data, and negative ion composition data.
