The population-density and the temperature distribution between the lower atomic levels of self-reversed lines emitted by a non-LTE arc plasma can be determined experimentally from the characteristics of the line contours. The proposed diagnostic scheme is applied to the Hg 63P2, 1, 0 levels in a high-pressure ac mercury arc. Results concerning the population distribution between these levels are reported for the first time.
