Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons represent one of the major component of the interstellar and circumstellar medium. They account for a significant fraction of the total infrared luminosity in galaxies. Also, they bind a significant fraction of interstellar carbon atoms. In this lecture we consider main properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, their radiation, and the role they play in the evolution of the interstellar medium.
