A unifying theoretical approach in the formalism of quantum electrodynamics is used to derive, from the same general principles, both the equations of radiative transfer for polarized radiation and the equations of statistical equilibrium for an atomic system embedded in a polarized radiation field. The nondiagonal terms of the density matrix of the atomic system are fully accounted for in both types of equations. The derived formulae are quite general and are directly expressed in terms of Stokes parameters. The formulae are then particularized by introducing the dipole approximation in the relevant matrix elements describing the interaction between the atomic system and the radiation field. Finally, a schematic and intuitive overview is presented of the various types of polarimetric observations which have been performed on different spectral lines originating both from magnetic and nonmagnetic regions of the solar atmosphere.
