We report the results of an investigation of the saturation of the ionospheric electric field during periods of large northward and southward IMF. We used propagated solar wind data to search for events between 1998 and 2007 when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is stable for more than 40 minutes. The selected intervals are binned according to interplanetary electric field (IEF) and superposed. SuperDARN velocity data are used to determine the average electric potential pattern for the various IEF bins. Results show that the reverse convection electric fields under northward IMF and the electric field across the anti-sunward flow under southward IMF saturate at the same value. Near the summer solstice, the reverse convection under northward IMF saturates at the same electric field as the southward IMF pattern with less clear results during winter. This points to the possibility of the ionospheric influence on the mechanism for polar cap potential saturation.
