Two aspects of plate tectonics: instantaneous plate kinematics and plate dynamics are reviewed. The kind of observations needed to enhance the knowledge in these areas is dealt with. Instantaneous plate kinematics is as yet unknown. Monitoring in time the relative positions of stable mid-plate points to cm-accuracy and the strains in critical areas of plate margins is an important task of the future. Perhaps the most crucial information on plate dynamics is gravity, i.e. the potential and its derivatives in space and time. A unique test of numerical models of different types of convection will, however, not be possible. A number of simple aspects of convection demonstrate that the whole spectrum of the gravity field from less than 100 km wavelength onward is needed with mgal-accuracy. While local features are best obtained by ground observations, regional and global features require aid from satellites.
