At the end of August, 2001, the 4 Cluster satellites made their first deep tail pass with apogee along the GSE X axis at -19 Re, crossing from north to south with a relatively uniform separation of { ~}2000~km. The energetic ion spectrometer part of RAPID (E>30 keV) observed entry and exits of the plasmasheet with significant time differences between the spacecraft. Furthermore, 3D distributions of the ion flux allow remote sensing of the particle boundary via finite ion gyroradius. Together, the timing differences and the 3D remote sensing permit the motion and orientation of the dynamical plasmasheet passages to be well determined.
