During the AMPTE solar wind Ba release, strong plasma waves in the 0.11-3.9-KHz frequency range were detected. The burst, lasting for 20 sec, beginning at 47 sec after the release, had a maximum amplitude of about 0.1 mV/m. At this time energetic electrons (E greater than 100 eV) were being detected, and the flux of these electrons appeared to be correlated with the waves. Also at this time there were ions observed at UKS which were moving in a different direction to the main solar-wind ion distribution. In this paper the development of the beam in the ion data is shown, discussing how it may be expected to produce waves at UKS. The waves were either electron-acoustic or ion-acoustic noise driven by the ion beam.
