A two dimensional model of the transition region and the lower corona, based on the idea that the magnetic flux is strongly concentrated at the boundaries of the supergranular convection cells, has been proposed by Gabriel in 1976. The plasma moves along the open magnetic field lines, which define the the so-called "funnel," and eventually builds up the solar wind.
