The Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS) measures three-dimensional mass/charge and energy/charge-resolved velocity distributions of ions from about 1 to 50,000 eV/q and from 1 to 237 amu/q, and electrons from about 1 to 28,000 eV. In addition to an ion mass spectrometer (IMS) and electron spectrometer (ELS), CAPS carries a high-resolution ion beam spectrometer (IBS) dedicated to solar wind monitoring. On December 28, 2000, at 0417 UT, Cassini crossed the Jovian bowshock for the first time, beginning a period of intermittent contact with the magnetosheath that lasted over a month, including apparent entry into the magnetopause on January 9 to January 10, 2001. We will report on detailed characteristics of the solar wind and magnetosheath plasmas during this interval. Also at about this time, a number of special periods lasting 24 hours were set asided when CAPS and other instruments gathered solar wind data under favorable viewing conditions for correlation with HST/STIS and Cassini observations of the Jovian auroral. We report on a preliminary analysis of the CAPS data and hypothesized correlations between solar wind ram pressure and auroral activity.
