Wide-angle plasma analyzers aboard the Venera 9 and 10 spacecraft are used to obtain ion and electron plasma measurements near Venus. There is strong evidence to support the assumption that the solar wind interacts with the upper ionosphere of Venus and not with a planetary magnetic field. Features of the optical umbra of Venus, the corpuscular umbra, and the corpuscular penumbra are defined. The distribution of plasma density behind the bow shock, including the optical umbra of Venus, is presented, and the existence of a Venusian plasma magnetic tail is revealed.
