High-resolution data on ion and electron beams and conics obtained from the Viking spacecraft at altitudes from 5000 km to 13,500 km above the auroral zone are presented. The data provide new observations of upward ion and electron beams and conics which indicate a great complexity and variability of the acceleration/heating process, requiring many different physical processes to be taken into account. A preliminary classification of beams and conics is introduced which displays this complexity of the plasma energization.
