Plasma observations from Suisei clearly demonstrate the existence of the shell structure in the phase-space distribution of cometary ions as an evidence of the pickup process in the upstream solar wind as well as inside the cometosheath. The observed spatial distribution of water-group ions is most consistently interpreted when one takes the waterproduction rate of 2×1030s-1. The model calculations shows the inbound-outbound asymmetry in the density of cometary ions in good agreement with the observation. It is suggested that this asymmetry is caused mainly by the difference of orbital conditions between the inbound and outbound orbits in reference to the comet.
