The principal objectives and the flight path of the Galileo mission are briefly reviewed, with attention given to the scientific and technical involvement of Germany in the mission. The technical side of this involvement includes the Retropulsion Module and mission control during the cruise phase to Jupiter. German scientific participation consists of several contributions of Max Planck institutes and universities to various instruments. Particular attention is given to the involvement of the DLR (the German Aerospace Research Establishment) in the Solid-State Imaging experiment. The ground program and prospects for future research are also discussed.
