One of the spectacular surprises of the recent spacecraft encounters with the comet Halley was the discovery of complex organic molecules associated with dust grains in the coma, namely the CHON particles. Formaldehyde oligomers were identified as a constituent of the complex mixture that constitutes the organic component of the dust. These oligomers when end-capped with water are observed in the laboratory to be stable in the gas phase up to 5 monomeric units in length and at temperatures characteristic of dust grains in the coma and higher. An overview of further experiments concerning the physico-chemical nature of formaldehyde-ice-dust mixtures relevant to the comet nucleus and dust is given.
