The physical structure of comets is studied and theoretical models are reviewed to describe the status and evolution of a comet nucleus. Critical and uncertain aspects are focused on, for example, the unclear crust formation mechanisms and undetermined stratigraphic composition. For a meaningful theoretical work, a continuous comparison between starting hypotheses and outcoming results with both astronomical observations and laboratory data is suggested.
