Recent EAS model calculations are used to investigate the feasibility of distinguishing showers initiated by ultrahigh-energy gamma-rays from those produced by hadronic cosmic rays. The study takes into account the specific configuration of the UMC experiment dedicated to the search for local sources of UHE gamma-rays. It is shown that, provided the experimental fluctuations are sufficiently small, the analysis of the shape of the muon distribution in EAS may give the possibility of distinguishing between the predictions of different models for the energy dependence of the photonuclear cross-section.
