Scientific paper

The present paper deals with ground-based photometric observations of the postnoon dayside cleft region, carried out from November 30 to December 19, 1977 with a 6-channel meridian-scanning photometer. Continuous observations of the 6300-A O I emission were used to map the postnoon cleft morphology. The cleft was located at 77 to 78 magnetic invariant latitude on geometrically quiet days and farther equatorward by 2 to 3 degrees on the most active days. During each afternoon, an equatorward movement of the cleft was observed after about 1400 MLT. The peak intensity of the 6300-A emission was usually 1 to 2 kR.
