IN the paper referred to by Prof. Forbes (NATURE, vol. x. p. 29) what is
ordinarily called Photographic Irradiation was attempted to be explained
by us, not as being caused by reflections from the back of the plate,
but as being due to the sun of all the optical imperfections of the
instrument with which the photograph is taken.
