Stable red arcs were observed at Maimaga (56.5 deg) on the Iakutsk meridian during November-December 1987 and in February 1988. These arcs were closer to the equator than the diffuse aurora boundary and, in a number of cases, overlapped with the latter. The results suggest that the observed red arcs were located in the projection region of the topside plasmasphere. The arcs appeared during disturbed periods as well as during periods of medium magnetic activity (Kp = 3).
