A scenario for the evoluton of the primitive solar nebula is presented which favors the formation of strongly bonded molecules such as CO and N2 over the more easily photolyzed CH4 and NH3 in all regions of the solar system. It is argued that solar photochemistry was important in the early solar nebula and that the interplanetary-magnetic-field-backscattered source of Ly-alpha should be represented in future models of solar system formation. In the reply, it is proposed that a gradual reduction in the H-alpha/CO2 ratio in volcanic gases caused by progressive mantle oxidation resulted in the critical threshold atmospheric O2 being reached around 2 Ga.
