A novel hypothesis for the origin of the parallel grooves on Phobos is proposed. After discarding the crack hypothesis, the paper suggests that the grooves formed as the result of a collision with a giant meteorite or fragments from near-Mars orbit. The grooves are considered to be 'furrows' which were 'ploughed' by planetary material displaced or even torn off as a result of the impact. This hypothesis provides a unified explanation for the formation of the giant crater on Phobos, the enigmatic grooves, and the absence of fragments.
