Observational data and current theoretical interpretations of dwarf nova activity are used to analyze the outburst phenomenon in GK Per. Novel photoelectric UBV observations of GK Per at quiescence are presented as well as results of UBV photographic monitoring during the 1983 outburst and observations related to the spectroscopic evolution in the UV during the 1982 outburst. It was found that the outbursts start at the inner edge of the accretion disc where an unstable region can be formed if M is approximately 10 to the 16th g/s. By assuming that this unstable region is occasionally formed by a modulation of the mass transfer rate from the secondary, the observed long reference times can be explained. It is suggested that a correlation can be found between GK Per, Population II X-ray binaries and the outburst activity of SU UMa stars.
