It is shown that the frequently ignored tidal distortion of the
secondary in X-ray and cataclysmic binaries may cause major errors in
deriving binary parameters from eclipses. New formulae, which are
accurate to 0.1 per cent or less of the stellar radius, are presented
for solving the eclipses.
