It has been ascertained that the density of matter in the upper mantle and especially in the transition layer increases much more rapidly than is predicted by the self-compression hypothesis. This implies that this matter undergoes transformations of some sort. The present paper attempts to elucidate the nature of these transformations and to determine how they have depended on thermodynamic conditions in the course of the earth's history. It is concluded that it is completely plausible to assume a 3-4 percent increase in the earth's radius and the surface of its mantle shells over the last two billion years of geological history. The probable geological consequences of such an expansion are examined.
