The waveforms of distant atmospherics recorded at night were analysed using a digital computer to yield phase spectra in the v.l.f. range of 1-20 kc/s and compared with phase spectra of daytime atmospherics. The rate of change of phase with frequency, as suggested by Sao, is found to increase progressively with increasing source distance. The possible use of phase spectra in the estimation of source distance from a single observing station is also discussed.
