The photocurrent from a metal surface under the action of bichromatic radiation is calculated as a function of the phase shift between monochromatic components (bichromatic phase). The dependences of the external photoeffect on the bichromatic phase as well as on parameters of the surface potential barrier are obtained, which could be the physical basis for a new phase method of optical surface diagnostics.
