We demonstrate phase contrast imaging of single-cycle THz waves and its applications in studying the properties of photonic crystal structures and metamaterials. Specifically, we make use of the sub-wavelength imaging capabilities of the polaritonic platform to image THz waves reflected from or transmitted through structured materials. The approach allows to study near-field as well as far-field properties of single structures or arrays made of such structures.
