There is, in general, no analytical solution of the equations governing the motion of a periodic comet moving under the influence of the Sun and one or more of the planets. It is necessary to adopt a step-by-step numerical method to obtain the elements (parameters) of the orbit at a specified time (the epoch) when the comet returns from a previous apparition, since these have been continually altered by the gravitational forces of the planets. The classical and modern methods are not easily understood by the average amateur. The method given below uses only the simplest concepts, viz. the laws of uniform motion and of gravitation. A computer program is readily constructed, and once started, the results are obtained without any interruption from the operator. No experience in the entry of values is required at any stage, as was previously the case with some of the classical methods.
