Using the global observations by COSMIC/Formosat-3 during the solar minimum of 2007-2008, the periodic oscillations in the F-region ionosphere with the periods of sub-harmonic solar rotation (9, 7 and 5.3 days) due to the recurrent geomagnetic activity are investigated. It was found that the peak-to-peak amplitudes of the 9-day periodic oscillations in electron density often exceeds 40% and exhibit significant latitudinal and altitudinal variation in response to the periodic CIR forcing. At low- and mid-latitudes, the oscillations in the electron density and NmF2 are well in-phase with the oscillations in Kp, while they are out of phase with Kp at high-latitudes. Further, the oscillations in the hmF2 and the thickness parameter (HT) exhibits good positive correlation with Kp at all latitudes, indicating that the ionospheric response is global and undergoes periodic expansion/contraction through the thermal expansion of neutral atmosphere. The combined action of both thermal expansion and upwelling neutral atmosphere causes a complex altitudinal response at high latitudes. The results presented in this paper are the first to show the periodic oscillations in the F-region ionospheric parameters and their latitudinal and altitudinal variation.
