Scientific paper

Large samples of cosmic muons have been collected by the CMS
Collaboration with both magnetic field on and off, with the goal of
commissioning the experiment for extended operation. The performance of
the CMS muon system has been studied in detail using these data. A
selection of results is presented in this report.
