Tracking in the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider is done with high pressure drift tubes, MDT, filled with 93% Argon - 7% CO2 at 3 bar. MDT chambers were tested with a high momentum muon beam at CERN. The tracking performance of the chambers is presented with emphasis on the method to determine the space-time relation with an accuracy of less than 20 micron, the single tube resolution and the tracking efficiency. The effect of variations in the gas temperature, composition and water content is reported and the dependence of the resolution upon variations of the operating conditions (electric field and threshold) is also discussed.
