Global systems of electric fields and currents in the ionosphere during a substorm are calculated on the basis of models of field-aligned currents (FACs) and ionospheric conductivities. A comparison is made with experimental data and empirical models. It is shown that the contribution of high-latiutude sources to electric fields observed at the equator is significant. The magnitude and sign of the field at the equator are mainly determined by the relationship between the intensities of FACs at the polar and equatorial boudaries of the auroral oval.
