It is shown that the thermodynamic equilibrium between Pt, Ir and a silicated melt of basaltic composition is obtained for a holding temperature of 1430°C and 24 hours. The reversibility of the reactions involved is also demonstrated. The existence of PGE dissolution in the melt, in the form of zerovalent metals, is confirmed. The influence of f O 2 in equilibrium with the melt is demonstrated and it is shown that, depending on the f O 2 value, the Pt and Ir metals used in the experiments are in a passivated state. This explains all our results as well as those of other authors. Geochemical applications support the validity of the experimental conclusions.
