Charged particle identification can be achieved by measuring the ionization in a medium (gas or condensed) together with the measurement of the momentum or the energy of particles. A detailed understanding of the ionization process and its stochastic nature is needed. Simulations can be made with analytic and Monte Carlo methods. They can be used to assess the expected performance of a TPC and to apply necessary corrections. For TPCs in which segment- and track-lengths cover a large range of values, an accurate data analysis requires attention to details of track segmentation. It may be advisable to study theoretically a series of possible combinations. Studies of this type have been described in 1,2.
