Simple semiempirical analytic formulas are developed for the mean number of neutrons, protons, and heavier particles evaporated from nuclei excited to a given energy. The total mass loss is also found. The expression ω(U) ~ exp (-2 √aU) for the level density is found to give a better fit to the data than U-2 exp (-2√aU). The variation of nuclear temperature during an evaporation chain is found. The results agree very well with the Monte Carlo calculations of Dostrovsky, Rabinowitz, and Bivins (1958) and are similar to those of Le Couteur (1952). A new expression is derived for the energy spectra of evaporated neutrons, for both single and sequential decays, which fits the data very well.
