Temporal changes in particle energy spectra below 500 MeV and above 1 GeV during three solar cosmic-ray events are investigated. Spectral shifts to higher energies and spectral hardening with time are found to be characteristic of all three events. These effects are attributed to the ordinary mechanism of particle acceleration between converging shock fronts in interplanetary space rather than to relativistic-particle production on the sun itself. Experimental evidence favoring this acceleration mechanism is discussed for one event, and it is concluded that the observed changes in particle energy spectra constitute experimental proof that solar cosmic rays are accelerated to relativistic energies (0.5 to 3.0 GeV) in the interplanetary medium.
