The occurrence of moving reflection maxima, called traces, in partial reflection (PR) height-time diagrams are explained in terms of acoustic waves travelling through the D-region. Characteristics of these traces indicate the presence of infrasonic waves; a typical height profile of a partially reflected ordinary wave showed 89 downcoming and 81 upgoing traces during an observation period from April through October 1975 with velocities ranging from -290 to -950 m/s. Also, double traces were observed of equal velocity indicating that the traces are almost parallel. It is suggested that the fine structure of the observed traces be investigated by increasing the temporal and spatial resolution of the PR sounding to provide a quantitative explanation of their occurrence.
