Photoneutron cross sections for Ta181(γ,n)Tam180 were determined from simultaneous measurements of total cross sections (σtot) and ground-state cross sections (σgs) for Ta180 in photodisintegration of Ta181 with laser Compton-backscattered γ rays. Techniques of direct neutron counting and photoactivation were used for the measurement of σtot and σgs, respectively. The partial cross sections for the isomeric state serves as a novel probe of the nuclear level density of Ta180. Implications for the p- and s-process nucleosynthesis of Tam180 are given.
