Generation of electromagnetic waves in a medium as a result of interaction between gravitational and electromagnetic waves is investigated analytically. It is shown that such interaction leads to the formation of two new electromagnetic waves having different amplitudes which increase with the time of interaction. In vacuum, the secondary wave amplitudes become zero, i.e., there is no interaction between gravitational and electromagnetic waves propagating in the same direction. The results are used to analyze the parameters of electromagnetic waves generated during the propagation of gravitational waves from distant extraterrestrial sources.
