The stability of the solutions of the relativistic Lorenz force equation, continuity equation, and Maxwell's equations for a linearly polarized wave in a cold plasma is investigated. The stability of the zero-order solution with wave number zero is investigated by considering perturbations perpendicular and parallel to the driver electric field in the absence of a static magnetic field. The four modes into which the wave can decay are analyzed, and it was found through numerical calculations that the wave is unstable. The results imply that in the Crab nebula the wave becomes unstable on time scales of about 0.1 sec, which is of the same order as the relevant pulsar time scales.
