Absorption of solar radiation by cloud particles is a key factor controlling the evolution of a stratocumulus cloud, hence LES simulations of their diurnal cycle are particularly sensitive to the parameterization of this process. Absorption however depends on the type of aerosol particles incorporated in cloud droplets. Current parameterizations are tested here against a more detailed scheme that accounts for the chemical composition of the aerosol. The impact on the simulated diurnal cycle is quantified.
