PANDA is a 4π internal detector planned for experiments at the antiproton storage ring HESR at the future international accelerator facility FAIR in GSI-Darmstadt. The detector is designed to take advantage of the extraordinary physics potential, e.g. in the field of charmonium spectroscopy or of exotic mesons, which will be available utilizing high intensity, phase space cooled antiproton beams with momentum in the range of 1.5 to 15 GeV/c. As a target, frozen H2 pellets or cluster jet for the pbar-p reactions and a thin wire for the pbar-A reactions will be applied. For a full angular coverage and a wide range of energies the detector is subdivided into a target spectrometer based on a solenoid surrounding the interaction region and a forward spectrometer using a dipole magnet for momentum analysis of the forward-going particles. In this contribution an overview of the design is presented.
