The Foum Zguid dyke is located in south Morocco and has an overall extension of about 200 Km. This dyke and similar dykes in Spain (Messejana dyke) and the North American continent are the result of a tectonomagmatic episode related the first rifting phases of the Central and North Atlantic Ocean basins. The Foum Zguid dyke was dated by the 40Ar/39Ar step-heating method (Sebay et al., 1991: Earth and planetary Sci. letters, 104), the age of the emplacement of this dyke is probably 200Ma. A paleomagnetic study at 11 sites along the Foum Zguid dyke has been carried out. Thermal and alternative field demagnetisation (AF) have been applied to a selection of pilot samples. The magnetic behavior of pilot samples indicates that AF demagnetisation is more effective than thermal cleaning in isolating the Characteristic Remanent Magnetization (ChRM) carried by Titanomagnetite. All sites exhibited normal polarities. This indicates the existence of a unique brief magmatic episode. The paleomagnetic pole derived from the average VGPS is well defined and very close to the paleomagnetic pole calculated for the Messejana dyke (Spain). The similitude of the Iberian pole and the African pole means that the two plates have undergone similar movements.
