Paleomagnetic records of geomagnetic field reversals are reviewed, with attention given to studies of lava and sediments; determinations of the geometry of transitional fields are also discussed. Dipole transitional field models have proven inconsistent with data derived from multiple records of a single reversal. Dominantly axisymmetric fields have been employed to interpret transition virtual geomagnetic pole paths and may have important implications for understanding dynamo models and reversals.
