PALEO is an ongoing study of fossil groups designed to probe the physical processes responsible for fossil group formation and the role of environment in their evolution. At its core is the first volume-limited, complete sample of fossil candidates, optically selected from the SDSS DR4. The existing large-scale spectroscopic data is being complemented with deep optical surface brightness observations which will probe the intra-group light component in fossil groups for the first time. The X-ray observations we propose here form the essential final component of our study, allowing us to confirm their fossil nature and examine the physical and chemical state of their hot intragroup medium.
