Be-7, produced primarily by the interaction of cosmic rays with oxygen and nitrogen in the stratosphere, is used to investigate the possible existence of significant amounts of descending stratospheric ozone in the ambient air or rural areas. A strong correlation was found between maximum Be-7 concentrations and peak ozone concentrations recorded at Whiteface Mountain, New York in July, 1975; isentropic trajectory calculations were used to confirm the stratospheric origin of the Be-7. One-day delays between Be-7 maxima and ozone maxima may be attributable to increased tropospheric ozone production. The observed relationship between Be-7 and ozone indicates that stratospheric ozone levels as great as 37 parts per billion were recorded.
