During the large storm on March 31, 2001 (D{st~ max} = -358 nT) the CLUSTER S/C were positioned at perigee at 4 RE in the equatorial plane during the main phase of the storm. During the storm on April 12, 2001 (Dst~max = -251 nT) the Cluster S/C were at perigee during the early recovery phase. These positions allowed the low-energy ring current population and outflowing ionospheric input to the inner magnetosphere to be measured. The high energy electron belt was depleted during the main storm phase at perigee so that the measurements were taken without any background from penetrating particles. During the March event we observe the outflow of H+, He+, and O+ at low latitudes at a distance of 4.2 RE. The outflow energy does not exceed about 500 keV. Simultaneously we record mirroring, bi-directional H+, He+, and O+ ions at higher energies (1 to 40 keV). We will trace the particle trajectories to determine the sources for the different populations, and will compare the low and high energy populations observed during the two storms. The April storm does not show the arrival of 10th of keV ions simply because the measurements took place in the recovery phase of the storm where the convection stopped.
